Hygiene

Routine dental cleaning is recommended every six months and will help to prevent tooth decay and maintain healthy gums. Your cleaning will include removal of the following to help maintain optimum oral health:

  • Stains
  • Plaque (bacterial colonies that stick to your tooth that may cause tooth decay and gum disease)
  • Calculus (a chemical deposit from your saliva that forms rough spots on your teeth)

At the routine cleaning visit a thorough dental examination is done, x-rays are taken, an oral cancer screening is performed, and your periodontal (gum) health is evaluated.

In Dr. Hardy’s office we use a digital x-ray system.  With this technology computerized equipment and specialized software are utilized to capture x-ray images.  These images are immediately available to us in the exam room.  Digital radiography requires no toxic chemicals which is safer for you, our staff and the environment.  By using digital technology, radiation exposure to patients and staff members is reduced by as much as ninety percent.

We also make use of intra-oral cameras. These are small digital cameras designed for use inside the patient's mouth.  This exciting technology allows you, the patient, to be an active partner in the decisions about your dental treatment by enabling you to see what we see in your mouth in real time.

After your periodontal health is evaluated Dr. Hardy and his team will work with you to determine the best course of treatment to meet your specific dental needs.  This may be as simple as returning for your routine dental cleanings or further treatment may be involved if periodontal disease is present.

Proper care of your teeth and early detection of periodontal problems is your best strategy in achieving and maintaining a healthy mouth as well as preventing tooth loss.
